Plus-size models are in great demand for plus-size fashion and designer lines and many other types of modeling. They are also more representative of the general population and can resonate more with larger than average sized people.
Size Requirements
Depending on the style of modeling you want to do, your size requirements would vary accordingly. For fashion and runway modeling there are strict requirements because of the high end fashion reputation that fashion designers want to uphold. You would be seeing a height of 170cm to 185cm and a body size of UK12-18 for print collaterals, 10-22 for runway (client’s decision), and size 18 for fitness modeling. These requirements are slightly more relaxed in commercial modeling (television commercials, catalogs, promotional events etcetera) which are negotiated through on a case-by-case basis, however in general models that are chosen fit the requirements.
Nevertheless, if you do find yourself somewhat near the numbers and specifications of curvy models, there is no harm trying out.
Your Character and Personality
This is an often unspoken requirement in modeling, but is vital to whether or not modeling will work out for you. A practical measure of your interest and character in this industry is your punctuality. Model agencies and clients are very busy in any given day with multiple models, clients and issues to deal with. You should also be a flexible person schedule-wise. You should be willing to accommodate projects that come to you at different timings and have good time management skills.
With a good sense of timing you should bring along with you a positive vibe and a likeable personality. This is because you will be working with many different people such as photographers, makeup artists, clients, model managers and bookers in order to successfully complete your modeling project. Thus, you would need to have a personality that helps you get along with these people, or else you will have a hard time.
Exercise Regularly and Lead a Healthy Lifestyle
There is no escape from a healthy lifestyle for any model. Models of all sizes equally have to put in the necessary effort to make sure the body’s specific physique is maintained. For layers of fat that are hanging loose, there is a need to firm it up and tone the muscles at that area. A plus-size model should ideally have a firm and bold body. Along with that your diet should be looked after well too. Make sure unhealthy fast and fried food are kept to minimal amounts and wholesome protein, fruits and vegetables are consumed on a regular basis to give you’re a healthy skin glow.
The most important criteria will always be confidence. Plus-size models have a much stronger presence with a fuller body. A confident pose and aura works better than makeup and brings the best out of the model.
